Year’s 2013 Word, Unword and Winged Saying have been announced

 

On Monday, January 20, 2014 in the Riga Latvian Society House Club Hall were announced results of the annual inquiry “Year’s Word, Unword and Winged Saying”.  

The year’s 2013 Word is Latvianization of the word "selfie". The year’s Unword is "deal, deals, to deal". With this word are described marketing and business deals. The year’s Winged Saying is the phrase said by the State President Andris Bērziņš „The future is in the hands of the people of the future!”

The inquiry have been organising for already 11th time the Riga Latvian Society Latvian Language Advancement Group in the cooperation with Latvian Writers Union and Latvian Academy of Science Terminology Commission. The aim of the inquiry is to promote more accurate attitude towards our language and the purity of its forms.

 

The members of the jury were philologist, terminologist, translator, editor Aldis Lauzis, lexicographer, University of Latvia professor, Latvian Academy of Sciences academician Andrejs Veisbergs, sociolinguist, MPhil (Cantab), Dr. philol. Dace Strelēvica-Ošiņa, doctorate of philology, author of teaching aids Dzintra Paegle,  terminologist Eduards Cauna, literary critic, translator Ieva Kolmane, publisher, publicist Ilmārs Šlāpins and Riga Latvian Society Latvian Language Advancement Group’s coordinator Maija Sinka.
