18.02.2015

On Tuesday, February 17, 2015 from 11.00 till 13.00 the Riga Latvian Society Folklore Commission invites all primary school children to the event “Come, come, Shrovetide!” where the participants will be able to find out about and participate in Shrovetide traditions. The event will take place in the Riga Latvian Society House, in Riga, Merķeļa Street 13.

During the event every child will be able to participate in three activities. First activity - „Glimmer, glimmer, the Shrovetide!” educational activity led by the ethnographer Indra Čekstere. In this activity children will get wider insight about different Shrovetide traditions in Latvia – bread baking, Shrovetide food, house decoration, beliefs and customs, as well as will find out about Shrovetide importance in whole year’s period. In second activity - „Horns, horns, horns, nails, nails, nails” – mask wearing and sound activity led by the ethnographer Elīna Kūla – Braže and musician Dina Liepa. There children will get acquainted with masks of different materials – linen, wool, wood, etc. Children will have opportunity to feel the varied materials, become familiar with mask characters, to feel them visually and musically and feel Shrovetide transformations.  Third activity is called „ Shrovetide competition and games”, led by the choreographer Ernests Spīčs. There children will have opportunity to compete in wit and agility, to beat off everything bad and be happy about the coming of spring.
