      Reading Bach Choir

Reading Bach Choir is an amateur choir based in Reading, consisting of 40-50 members, passionate about achieving the highest possible standards. The choir gives four concerts a year, in and around Reading, Berkshire – some are a cappella and others are with professional soloists and instrumentalists. The repertoire is very varied – from the Renaissance to the 21st century. The programmes are stimulating, sometimes challenging, and often include unusual or lesser known works. The choir has a particular love for and loyalty to the works of JS Bach. Through their performance, the singers want audiences to share with them the excitement of unfamiliar vocal landscapes, as well as a re-creation of the familiar.

Matthe Hamilton is regularly invited to work with leading symphonic choirs, including London Symphony Chorus - where he is Associate Conductor - BBC Symphony Chorus, and CBSO Chorus; and with chamber choirs including New London Chamber Choir - where he is Musical Director - BBC Singers, ChorWerk Ruhr, and Manchester Chamber Choir. Additionally, Matthew is director of Reading Bach Choir, Keele Bach Choir, and Salford Choral Society.

Matthew read music at Oxford, before taking a Masters degree in composition at the University of Manchester. He won a full scholarship to study choral conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, graduating in 2010. In addition he participated in masterclasses with some of Europe’s finest professional choirs, including Berlin Radio Choir and Netherlands Chamber Choir. In 2010 he was the winner of the Bramstrup Conducting Award in Denmark.

Matthew has prepared choirs for conductors including Fabio Luisi, Valery Gergiev, John Storgårds, Charles Dutoit, Thierry Fischer, David Robertson, John Wilson and Mark Minkowski, and for festivals including the Brighton Festival and BBC Proms, where he has worked on music from Birtwistle to the Pet Shop Boys. He will appear again at the Proms this year, as chorus master to the London Symphony Chorus in John Fould’s Mantras. He works frequently with the BBC Singers, and has conducted them in concert at the Barbican, live on Radio 3 and for TV, and in the recording studio.

Matthew has recently given his debut concert with New London Chamber Choir, with whom he has also appeared on Radio 3’s In Tune. Highlights of the 2014-15 season have included a series of concerts in Germany with ChorWerk Ruhr (including the first performances of a new piece by Eriks Eðenvalds), guest chorus master for BBC Symphony Chorus in the UK première of Brett Dean’s The Last Days of Socrates at the Barbican and live on Radio 3, and his début at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall in Duruflé Requiem with Wayne Marshall. 2015-16 will see Matthew work as guest chorus master for CBSO Chorus in Brahms Requiem and his debut as chorus master for Choeur de Radio France.
