Rainis and Aspazija remembered at the Vilnius Latvian Society

On April 30, at 16.00 the event devoted to Rainis and Aspazija 150th anniversary took place at the Vilnius Latvian Society.
In the event participated the Vilnius Latvian Society members and supporters, teachers and students from the Vilnius University and Kaunas Vytautas Magnus University Centre of Letonics, guests from the National Library of Lithuania, Lithuanian minority national organisations and the Riga Latvian Society.
The event opened the Chairman of the Vilnius Latvian Society Gunta Rone. Rainis poetry read the member of the Vilnius Latvian Society, actress Velta Anužiene, whose creative work life goes on in Lithuania.
About Aspazijas and Rainis life and creative works road, stressing Latvian and Lithuanian mutual cultural interaction points, told the researcher of the poets life and creations, Rainis and Aspazija Museums specialist and the Vice-Chairman of the Riga Latvian Society Gaida Jablovska, whose life long time was connected with Rainis youth days land - Museum Jasmuiža and the poets last accommodation in Riga, Baznīcas Street 30. The publishing house Madris has recently published two her compiled books: Rainis works selection Viss iet, viss rit un riet last year and Rainis and his older sisters Līze correspondence Sirdsmīļo brālīt! this year.
The participants of the event had opportunity to watch also the film directors Rodrigo Rikards films Aspazija fragments.
Greetings from the Riga Latvian Society that has long term friendship with the Vilnius Latvian Society brought the RLS Council member Stella Līpīte, who also read the poetry of Aspazija and Rainis.
The event participants shared their thoughts about their favourite poets works. The poetry of Rainis and Aspazija sounded in Latvian, Latgalian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian and Moldavian languages.
Rainis works have been translated and published also in Lithuanian language. The translations have made Ķēstutis Nastopka, Silvestrs Gaižūns, Kosta Korsaks, Euģenija Matuzeviča, Sigits Geda and other translators.
In September the renewed memorial plate will be unveiled at the house, where Rainis lived in Vilnius.
