Toronto Latvian School "Valodiņa" (Language)

The Toronto Latvian School „Valodiņa” is an independent organisation that gathers children, who have interest to learn Latvian language, Latvian culture and work in the Latvian environment, independently from their Latvian language knowledge level. In the school pupils are not divided in traditional classes, but in Latvian language knowledge levels in several age groups – starting from the language acquiring basis till the excellent language knowledge. The school provides Latvian language, singing, folk dance and games, geography and history lessons. The lessons are enriched with common sport and social activities. The lessons take place on Friday evenings. The school has 40 pupils.

Latvian School in Hamilton

The Latvian School in Hamilton was founded in 1948 and it is the oldest Latvian school in Canada. The Latvian school in Hamilton teaches the elementary school programme (from Kindergarten till grade 8). In September 2011 also the gymnasium renewed the work, which had been stopped for 18 years. All learning is organised in Latvian language in the school. Since 2009 the Language Class is open, where children with minimal Latvian language knowledge can acquire the Latvian language.

The Latvian Gymnasium in Hamilton is a part of the Latvian School in Hamilton. It resumed its work in September, 2011 after 18 years’ interruption. In spring 2015 the first 3 students finished the renewed gymnasium. 94 students in total have finished the gymnasium.

The activities in the Ottawa Latvian School take place on Friday evenings from 18:00 till 20:30 in the Ottawa Latvians Evangelically Lutheran Parish premises. In the Ottawa Latvian School activities participate families – children parents work as teachers. The activities are organised in one group. In the school children learn Latvian language, literature, history and geography. The activities end with the learning and singing of Latvian folk songs. The activities are in Latvian language.

Toronto Latvian Society Saturday School was founded in 1950. In 2015 already 64th class finished the school. Since the opening of the school already 1050 pupils have finished it. The school’s premises are located in Canada Latvian Centre in Toronto. The school works from September until the end of May on Saturdays. Pupils at the age from 3 to 14 years learn in the school. The school’s work is organised in kindergarten, pre-school and grade 1 – 8 groups. The pupils learn Latvian language, history, geography, Bible lessons, folk dances, singing and kokle playing.

The Toronto Latvian Society was founded in 1948. Its founders were Latvians, who had arrived to Canada already before the World War II. On January 10, 1948 the chairman of the Canada Latvian Club Alfrēds Karslons introduced with the aims of the Toronto Latvian Society: „We, old Latvians, think it to be our duty, as much as we can, to help each arrived Latvian by giving him the material support, help with the search of place of living, etc. These people do not ask gifts, they still have Latvian pride”. The Society’s work is based on the working principles of the Riga Latvian Society.

Nowadays Imanta Latvian Society of Edmonton unites Latvians of several generations living in Alberta Province, people with Latvian roots and all, who have interest about Latvia and Latvian heritage. To many the Latvian language is not a conversational speech, that is why the official language of the Society is English to better involve people and inform the members, interesents and supporters.
